The Croydon is a luxury apartment rental building located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. A former hotel, The Croydon was built in 1920 and surrounds about half the block of 86th Street, bound by Madison and Fifth Avenues. It sits 15 stories high and offers a doorman and a garage but no sidewalk landscaping. The Croydon was designed by Schwartz & Gross and was erected in 1923. There are 343 apartments in the building, all of which enjoy the Dean & Deluca on Madison and 85th. No two apartments in The Croydon are alike, but all boast the same pre-war charm. The building was converted from a hotel to apartments in 1976.

Location

This neighborhood at the south end of the Carnegie Hill District became very attractive in the late 1980’s and the 1990s with the opening of many boutiques and several restaurants and the upgrading of a nearby supermarket. There is excellent neighborhood shopping and many excellent schools and religious institutions nearby as well as many of the city’s most important cultural institutions. There is excellent west-bound cross-town bus service on the street, and the east-bound service has a stop across the avenue. An express subway station is at Lexington Avenue.

The Croydon offers a chance to live in a historical building in one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in the city. The units might not necessarily be perfectly modern, but the charm is there, and the building tells a story. The common areas have been beautifully restored and updated. It’s a true white glove building, one that’s reminiscent of old New York. If glitz is your thing, you might not like The Croyon, but if it’s old world glamour you’re looking for, this is the building for you.
